Chinese Money — History, Bank Notes, and Coins
Written by GavinUpdated Jul. 19, 2023
Aside from its practical value, money is made distinctive by the culture in which it rises and evolves. Chinese money is no different, with the bank notes proudly diplaying the face of Mao Zedong as testament to China's recent history. In this guide, beyond the value of money in its purchasing power, we consider its value as a reflection of the Chinese people.
Photos of Current Chinese Bank Notes
Below is the fifth series of banknotes, commissioned in 1999, with the head of Mao Zedong on the front, and fourth series jiao notes. The 2 jiao note is now seldom seen.

The History of Chinese Money
From Shells to Silver
The 5 jiao note celebrates the diverse heritage of China's people
The earliest form of Chinese money was shells (hence the use of the shell character in many other characters related to value, money and wealth). Money shells were later bronzed. In the period of rival states (770 – 221 BC) different shapes of money were used by different states: knife-shaped, spade shaped, and ant-nose-shaped.
When Qin Shihuang, the First Emperor, united China in 221 BC round coins with a square hole in the middle were introduced and this form of currency was used until around 1890. This is the form of the currency in the nation's popular imagination, and representations of it can be seen in the modern day as symbols of wealth and prosperity.
For higher level transactions, ingots of silver were commonly used. These ingots resemble in their form the classic origami boat children enjoy folding out of paper, and it may be seen on souvenir stalls as the item held aloft in some representations of the Buddha, a symbol of prosperity.
The Early-Modern Era
Chinese banking started almost by accident in the 1820s when a successful dyer with a branch office in Beijing was asked by a friend if he might give him some money in Pingyao, his home town, collecting the same amount from the dyer's office in Beijing. This enabled the friend to avoid bandits. Others caught on to this idea and so that hometown, the attractive and well-preserved walled town of Pingyao in Shanxi province, became for a while the financial center of all China.
The end of the imperial era and the turbulent time that followed saw first local mints, then high inflation and financial instability. It was not until the Communist era began in 1949 that a stable currency was established, using mostly notes, and coins for denominations of 1 yuan and lower.
Chinese Money Today
The 1 jiao note celebrates the diverse heritage of China's people
Money forms a big part of the everyday lives of Chinese. Electronic transactions are becoming increasingly common, so expect the frustrations in supermarket queues as everywhere else in the world when someone ahead of you has a handful of items and chooses to pay with a bank card. Checks are rarely used. Cash is still the preferred means of transaction, so notes of various denominations are changing hands all day long, even for quite large amounts.
Becoming rich is a common wish, dream and pursuit, though more and more of the younger generation, not having been to exposed to the difficulties their parents and grandparents faced in times of need, are looking further afield in life for fulfillment.
Preferences and Traditions
In China notes are preferred to coins, especially in rural areas, though historically, and up until only about 140 years ago, the coin with the hole in the middle was currency.
Red envelopes containing bank notes are ritually given at special occasions rather than presents: festivals (particularly Chinese New Year), marriages, births, visiting sick relatives, etc.
'Paper money' (actually yellowy low-grade perforated paper) is even burned for the dead in the belief (or tradition) that it will give them money for the afterlife, especially on Qingming Festival or Tomb Sweeping Day. Replica 100 Yuan Notes are also stuck on tombs.
Denominations of Chinese Money
The basic unit of Chinese currency is the yuan (元 /ywen/), spoken colloquially as kuai (块 /kwhy/). There are 10 jiao (角 /jyaoww/), known colloquially as mao (毛 /maoww/), to the yuan. The fen (分 /fnn/), 1/100th of a yuan, is so seldom used now that fen coins and notes are almost out of circulation.
Paper notes come in 1 and 5 jiao, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 yuan denominations, though the 2 Yuan Note is rarely seen these days. There are also 1 jiao, 5 jiao and 1 yuan coins. See below for photos.

Apart from the 2 yuan and 1 Yuan Notes these notes from the fourth series are seldom seen in circulation.

Until the development of bills of exchange in medieval Europe and paper currency in medieval China, metal coins were the only such medium. Despite their diminished use in most commercial transactions, coins are still indispensable to modern economies; in fact, their importance is growing as the result of the widespread use of coin-operated machines. For a discussion of paper currencies, see money.Coins as historical dataBeing made in most ages of precious metal, or alternatively possessing a substantial token value, coins have always been prized, often hoarded, and, therefore, frequently buried for safety. The contents of such savings banks have been dug up in all ages, so that the coins of past civilizations continue to be found in vast numbers. Studied alongside literary or archaeological evidence, they yield a wide range of information that is especially valuable for chronology and economic history. Coins may reflect the wealth and power of cities and states, and study of their distribution may help to define the physical extent of territorial dominion or to illustrate major commercial connections. Thus, the popularity in ancient times of Athenian coins in the Levant and of Corinthian silver in Magna Graecia (southern Italy) testifies to established trade links. Finds of early Roman imperial gold in India corroborate the reference of the Roman historian Pliny the Elder to the drain on Roman gold to pay for Indian and other Eastern luxuries. Likewise, huge finds of Arab silver coins in Scandinavia show the extent of trade, in particular the demand for furs by the ʿAbbāsid caliphs and the Sāmānid rulers of Iran. One result of such widespread commercial contacts is that certain currencies acquired special international preeminence. In ancient times, those of Athens, Corinth, and Philip II of Macedon were widely popular. The uniform coinage of Philip’s son Alexander the Great was struck at mints widely scattered throughout his vast empire and was universally accepted. In medieval times, the gold dinars (a term derived from the Roman denarius) of the early caliphs and the gold ducats of Florence and Venice played a similar role—as did the silver dollars of Mexico, the Maria Theresa of Austria, and the gold sovereigns of Great Britain in modern times. Moreover, the study of depreciation and debasement of coinage may illuminate past national financial distress. For example, the heavily alloyed 3rd-century-ad Roman antoniniani (coins introduced by the Roman emperor Caracalla, originally having a value of two denarii) tell their tale as clearly as the depreciating paper currency of Germany in and after 1919.Britannica QuizMoney, Money, Money QuizOpen full sized imageCollection of gold coins from the medieval Fāṭimid dynasty found by divers in the port of Caesarea off the coast of Israel in February 2015.Ariel Schalit/AP ImagesOpen full sized image(Top) Obverse side of a silver tetradrachm showing the head of Alexander the Great deified, with horn of Ammon. Diameter 31 mm.WGS PhotofileNo less valuable than the economic evidence yielded by a comparative study of coins is their purely documentary importance. Together with medals, they present an unrivaled series of historical portraits from the 4th century bc to the present day, many of them otherwise unknown, like the Greco-Bactrian kings or certain usurpers during the Roman Empire. Greek coinage is a particularly notable contribution to the history of art, displaying not only the beauty and strength of many artistic traditions but also (like Roman coinage) the miniature likenesses of numerous large-scale sculptural and architectural works now lost. The imperial coinage of Rome, apart from its portraiture, is important above all for the remarkable detail of its chronological and political content; and from both Greek and Roman coins much can be learned of mythology and religion. The Christian influences active in medieval Europe can be similarly measured from medieval currencies. The principal metals of which ancient coins were made were electrum, gold, silver, copper, brass, and bronze—all of them more or less resistant to decay. Their use at first was generally dictated by availability. The earliest coins of Asia Minor were of electrum, a natural occurring alloy washed from Lydian rivers (electrum was later produced artificially). Gold became the major currency metal of southwestern Asia as a whole, being derived from Scythian, Pontic, and Bactrian sources. The city-states of the Greek mainland preferred the silver that adjacent mines supplied, and the mines of Italy led to the choice of bronze for the earliest coinage of Rome. With the development of internal economies and external trade, gold, silver, and copper or bronze quickly came to be used side by side; Philip II of Macedon popularized gold in Greece, but it became paramount only in the Byzantine and Arab empires and in the great commercial currencies of the Italian republics of the 13th century onward. Silver, however, was nearly always powerful in Roman currency and was the major coinage metal of Europe from the 8th to the 13th century. Bronze or copper was first used for small change in Greece from the late 5th century bc and in the Roman and Byzantine systems as well; the vast currency of China consisted of base metals down to modern times. The foregoing metals furnished most currencies until the early 20th century, when the appreciation in value of gold and silver and the need to economize led to the general production of paper currencies for the higher units of value. Token units of lower value expressed in terms of nickel (used, exceptionally, in Bactria in the 2nd century bc), cupronickel, bronze, and, in times of postwar stress, aluminum and aluminum bronze supplemented precious metals in some countries. Lead, which may easily decay, has seldom been used for coinage, except by the Andhras (inhabitants of the Deccan in ancient India), in pre-Roman Gaul, and in the more recent coinages of the Malay states. Iron, very occasionally used in antiquity—e.g., in Sparta—reappeared in German coins of World War I. Zinc was employed by Rome as a constituent of fine brass coins and as an element in the alloy of a few Chinese coins from the 15th to the 17th century. Base metals furnished the material for some Celtic coins in Gaul and Britain in the last century bc. In crises, currencies have been produced from leather, cloth, card, paper, and other materials.Britannica MoneyHousehold FinanceInvestingRetirementHistory & TheoryAbout UsPrivacy PolicyTerms & Conditions© 2024 Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc.Coins from the People's Republic of China – Numista

The People’s Republic of China (“China”) is located in Asia and is the largest country by population and by size, excluding Russia and Canada. As a country, China dates back to 2070 BC, however its current form as the People’s Republic of China was only established in 1949 after the Chinese Civil War. Succeeding the nationalist government, the communist government has ruled mainland China since. The currency of China is the Yuan, which began as a form of continuation of the nationalists’ currency. It was, however, rapidly “revaluated” soon after the establishment of the new republic, with zeroes being “cut off” from the currency. Each yuan is divided into 100 fen, or 10 jiao, with early coinage from the PRC consisting principally of aluminium 1, 2, and 5 fen pieces. These coins continue to be issued for limited usage today. Following the economic reforms of the 1970s, higher denomination coins such as 1, 2, and 5 jiao (10, 20, 50 fen), and 1 yuan coins were issued for limited circulation. The first jiao- and yuan-denominated coins to be circulated on a large-scale basis were issued in the 1990s. Today, China continues to issue the fen coins, although they are not commonly used for circulation and are extremely rare to find as it is primarily banks who use them for balancing purposes. The 1 and 5 jiao, as well as the 1 yuan coin are commonly used, however the large-size 1 jiao is generally no longer accepted. Wikidata: Q148

Coins were introduced as a method of payment around the 6th or 5th century BCE. The invention of coins is still shrouded in mystery: According to Herodotus (I, 94), coins were first minted by the Lydians, while Aristotle claims that the first coins were minted by Demodike of Kyrme, the wife of King Midas of Phrygia. Numismatists consider that the first coins were minted on the Greek island of Aegina, either by the local rulers or by King Pheidon of Argos.
Aegina, Samos, and Miletus all minted coins for the Egyptians, through the Greek trading post of Naucratis in the Nile Delta. It is certain that when Lydia was conquered by the Persians in 546 BCE, coins were introduced to Persia. The Phoenicians did not mint any coins until the middle of the fifth century BCE, which quickly spread to the Carthaginians who minted coins in Sicily. The Romans only started minting coins from 326 BCE.

Coins were brought to India through the Achaemenid Empire, as well as the successor kingdoms of Alexander the Great. Especially the Indo-Greek kingdoms minted (often bilingual) coins in the 2nd century BCE. The most beautiful coins of the classical age are said to have been minted by Samudragupta (335-376 CE), who portrayed himself as both a conqueror and a musician.

The first coins were made of electrum, an alloy of silver and gold. It appears that many early Lydian coins were minted by merchants as tokens to be used in trade transactions. The Lydian state also minted coins, most of the coins mentioning King Alyattes of Lydia. Some Lydian coins have a so-called legend, a sort of dedication. One famous example found in Caria reads "I am the badge of Phanes" - it is still unclear who Phanes was.
In China, gold coins were first standardized during the Qin Dynasty (221-207 BCE). After the fall of the Qin dynasty, the Han emperors added two other legal tenders: silver coins and "deerskin notes", a predecessor of paper currency which was a Chinese invention.
